Owen Thompson qualified in 1986 from Queens University Belfast. He moved back to Coleraine in 1988 where he has worked in Waterside. Between 1988 and 2000, Owen undertook extensive postgraduate programmes resulting in the attainment of his FDSRCPS. MFGDP(UK) and MGDSRCPS, by examination, between 1993 and 1996. During this time Owen was a postgraduate clinical tutor for the Faculty of General Dental Practice and he continued this role for the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency between 2000 and 2010. More recently Owen completed his Masters in Clinical Leadership from Glasgow University Business School, in 2010. Owen continues to teach final year dental students in the Dental School in Belfast and enjoys mentoring graduate dentists starting out on their career pathway. He regularly lectures the Northern Ireland dental graduates on career development and restorative/implant treatment planning. Owen has an interest in replacing amalgam filling with white composite fillings and is involved with practice-based research projects in collaboration with Birmingham Dental School trialling new white filling materials and metal free cosmetic crowns. He has published in many national and international journals, on the long-term success of these materials. As a recognition of his contribution to dentistry and his teaching commitments, Owen was inducted as a Fellow into the International College of Dentists in 2010.
