Martin Chan was born and brought up in Lancashire. He studied dentistry at the Royal Dental Hospital of London and graduated from the University of London: Bachelor of Dental Surgery (University of London) He completed a number of junior hospital posts in London, Merseyside and South Wales before travelling overseas. He was appointed to teaching posts at the University of Otago Dental School in New Zealand and then at the University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Dentistry. Upon returning to the U.K. he passed the Royal College Dental Fellowship examinations: Fellowship in Dental Surgery (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow) Mr Chan underwent specialist training at the Leeds Dental Hospital and the Liverpool University Dental Hospital. During this time, he was awarded the: Master of Dental Science Degree (University of Leeds) Diploma in Restorative Dentistry (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh) Membership Diploma in Restorative Dentistry (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh) Intercollegiate Specialty Assessment in Restorative Dentistry (from the four Royal Colleges of the UK and Ireland) He also gained registration on four of the General Dental Council’s specialist lists: Restorative Dentistry Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics Periodontics Endodontics Mr Chan undertook further periods of elective study in the Netherlands and the USA prior to being appointed as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the Leeds Dental Institute (Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, 1997-2021). During his time at the Leeds Dental Institute Mr Chan completed an exhaustive training programme in Comprehensive Implantology, at the Tatum Institute in 2002/2003. This encompassed the science, theory and advanced “hands-on” surgical training in dental implantology. Subsequently, he developed the Dental Implant Programme at The Leeds Dental Institute and was clinical lead for this, as well as head of the Restorative Dentistry department for many years. He has regularly lectured to both undergraduate and postgraduate dental students at the University of Leeds, School of Dentistry. He has been very active in both general and specialist training of dentists and was a long serving Training Programme Director in Restorative Dentistry for the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery. Mr Chan has had numerous publications in both national and international dental journals, and has lectured at a variety of national dental conferences and international meetings. He has previously served as Honorary Secretary to the British Society for the Study of Prosthetic Dentistry, member of the Specialist Advisory Committee of the Royal College of Surgeons and Regional Specialty Advisor in Restorative Dentistry. He has also been a specialist examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons. Mr Chan’s main passion and focus remains on the specialist treatment of patients with complex and challenging needs. He has been in private specialist practice for over 20 years and now practices exclusively at Specialist Dental Care in Ilkley.
