Penny qualified from Newcastle dental school in 1986 and spent her first year in the oral surgery, prosthetic and radiology departments. In 1988 she moved to Bradford to run a single-handed practice prior to moving to Switzerland to work for a year. Upon her return she worked in general practice and hospital prior to moving to Nottingham.
