Dr. Sara A. Stires is a board-certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with over 27 years of military service and a passion for delivering top-quality, compassionate care. She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, then went on to serve in the United States Navy Dental Corps. Dr. Stires completed a General Practice Residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia, where she treated medically complex patients with a wide range of dental needs. She then practiced general dentistry for three years at the Washington Navy Yard before being selected for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Upon completing her surgical training, she became a staff surgeon at both the Brigade Dental Clinic at the United States Naval Academy and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. As both a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons , Dr. Stires is highly skilled in: · Complex tooth extractions · Dental implants · Biopsies for oral pathology · Facial trauma · Corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery · Limited management of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders Dr. Stires’ surgical expertise is complemented by her military background, where she developed strong leadership and problem-solving skills. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, she served as a Radar Intercept Officer in the F-14B Tomcat and a Weapons Systems Officer in the F/A-18F Superhornet. The adaptability and precision required in those roles now inform her patient care approach—always calm, thoughtful, and innovative. In addition to clinical work, Dr. Stires remains active in education, teaching residents and regularly lecturing on oral and maxillofacial surgery topics at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland. When she's not in the clinic, Dr. Stires enjoys traveling, music, and spending time with family and friends. She’s especially grateful for the support of her husband, son, and daughter, which has allowed her to pursue this incredible field of dentistry.
