Dr. Sam Yoo’s journey to dentistry is as rich and vibrant as the cultures that shaped him. Born in South Korea, he spent his early childhood between Korea and the Philippines before his family made their way to the United States, eventually putting down roots in Birmingham, Alabama. It was there that Dr. Sam grew up, built lifelong connections, and discovered his passion for helping others. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, then continued south to sunny Florida, where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from LECOM School of Dental Medicine in Bradenton. With a heart for service and a deep sense of gratitude for the community that raised him, Dr. Sam returned to Alabama with a mission: to give back. He’s been an active volunteer with organizations like Cahaba Valley Health Care, UAB Hospital, Affinity Hospice, and Community Kitchens—experiences that not only sharpened his clinical skills but also deepened his commitment to serving with compassion and purpose. Dr. Sam is known for his gentle chairside manner and ability to put even the most anxious patients at ease. He believes dentistry isn’t just about teeth—it’s about people. He takes the time to listen, educate, and ensure every patient feels seen, heard, and understood. He’s also thrilled to be practicing alongside his sister, Dr. Ji Yoo, at the Sylacauga office—making them one of Luma Dentistry’s most dynamic sibling duos! When he’s not caring for patients, you’ll likely find Dr. Sam spending time with family and friends, sipping coffee at his favorite local café, jamming on the bass guitar, planning his next travel adventure, or on the soccer field—either playing the game he loves or cheering from the sidelines.
