Athena Papas, DMD, PhD, FACD, began her dental career graduating from Jackson College in 1967. She earned a PhD in oral biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971 and a DMD from Harvard University in 1974. She joined the faculty at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, becoming Distinguished Professor and the first to receive an endowed professorship as Dr. Erling Johansen Professor in Dental Research. Her research focuses on oral healthcare for the elderly, medically compromised, Sjögren’s syndrome, cancer, and bone marrow transplants. She led over 65 clinical trials and developed treatments like a rinse for mouth sores and a drug for dry mouth.
