Dr. Nguyen understands that a person’s overall health goes far beyond what most dentists check in the course of a routine dental appointment. Through her years of study, research and advanced training in sleep medicine, she has developed a strong respect for the role that oral health and symptoms play in sudden cardiac death. Dr. Nguyen graduated from the University of Illinois in 1996, and graduated from dental school in 2000, then continued on with her general practice residency in 2001. The general practice residency (GPR) is an intensive post-graduate training program fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The program is designed to train the general dentist in the management of medically complex and special needs patients in both outpatient and hospital settings, while increasing knowledge in the practice of dentistry and its various disciplines. While she was in dental school, Dr. Nguyen took part in research and won three awards. Dr. Rubina Nguyen and her husband, Dr. Paul Nguyen (cardiologist) are co-founders of S.C.A.R.F. (Sudden Cardiac-Death Awareness Research Foundation), a non-profit organization committed to reducing sudden cardiac death. As the only dentist in the United States to co-found a medical non-profit (S.C.A.R.F.), Dr. Rubina Nguyen supervises and instructs approximately 30 interns each year in research and education related to cardiac death. She brings this knowledge back to her own practice, helping patients screen for complex medical issues that may have been overlooked. Her professional memberships include the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, American Dental Association®, and the American Sleep and Breathing Academy.
