Dr. Gum received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry, where he was also awarded the Quintessence Award for Clinical Achievement in Restorative Dentistry. Prior to attending dental school, and after earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Vertebrate Zoology from the University of Washington, he owned and operated a dental laboratory for eight years, crafting superior crown and bridgework for several island dentists. Born and raised in Honolulu, Dr. Gum graduated from Kaimuki High School. He is an artisan by avocation, dabbling in stained glass, glass blowing, pen making, gyotaku (fish printing) and currently ukulele making. Married for 41 years, he is the father of two awesome children and the grandfather of three amazing boys.
