Dr. Mikelis Austrins immigrated to the United States in 1950 after fleeing Latvia with his family during WWII. He has lived in southwest Michigan for most of his life. He received his bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University in 1966, while also playing Division I tennis for the Broncos. He went on to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from University of Michigan in 1970. He then served as a captain in the United States Army in Fulda, Germany while working as a dentist. In 1972, he took over Austrins Family Dentistry from his mother Dr. Emilija Austrins. He is a long standing member of the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association and Kalamazoo Valley Dental Association. After 50 years of working as a dentist, Dr. Mikelis Austrins has recently turned over the practice to his daughter, Dr. Mara Matison. He is now enjoying organic gardening and spending time with his 4 grandchildren, 2 daughters and wife of 59 years. He is fluent in English, Latvian and German.
