Dr Maureen Khoo, a born and bred New Yorker, has been in private practice for more than a decade, serving the greater New York City community. Her path to dentistry wasn’t exactly linear. Initially trained as a scientist, Dr Maureen received her undergraduate degree with high honors in Biochemistry from Mount Holyoke College, and following graduation, she joined research labs at UCLA, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and finally at the National Institutes of Health for a two year fellowship. While at interviews for prospective Biochemistry PhD programs, she came upon the revelation that she wanted a deeper connection with people. Dr Maureen returned to the west coast, to her dream school, to pursue her dental degree at the University of California at San Francisco. Between her 1st and 2nd years, she spent the summer in the research lab of Dr John B Featherstone, the former Dean of UCSF and pioneer of CAMBRA (caries management by risk assessment). She studied the role of cariogenic bacteria and children with tooth decay, and presented their findings at the IADR. After graduating from UCSF, she returned home and further trained at NYU-Lutheran Medical Center’s General Practice Residency for two years (2nd year appointed as Chief Resident) in treating complicated jaw fractures and reconstruction, oral surgery, implant dentistry and endodontics. Dr Maureen is committed to advanced continuing education (more than 400 continuing education hours in the last year), and has traveled continentally and abroad, and focuses her study to implant dentistry, aesthetic dentistry and full mouth rehabilitative cases. She has found her tribe at the Kois Center, with Dr John Kois, spearheading his evidence based research center in advancing the field of dentistry. Dr Maureen is an active member of the Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Clear Aligners, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and a fellow with the International Dental Implant Association.
