Dr. Hanana's path to success is a testament to resilience. After experiencing homelessness at a young age, he embraced a nomadic life, gaining cultural perspectives and fluency in multiple languages. This experience instilled in him a strong work ethic, allowing him to balance full-time work with his studies at the University of Houston. There, he excelled, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemical and Biophysical Sciences, while conducting research on heart failure. Dr. Hanana's dedication extended beyond academics. He actively participated in community services, earning recognition as a role model for young people.
Academic and Surgical Excellence
Dr. Hanana's pursuit of knowledge continued at the prestigious University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. He delved into Oral Cancer research, presenting his findings on CD8αα++ Dendritic Cells at the American Student Dental Association Annual Meeting. His exceptional skills led him to be chosen for the dental school's Oral Surgery Honors Program, where he honed his surgical skills. Here, Dr. Hanana was awarded the Thomas F. Burks Scholarship for Academic Merit.
Driven to further specialize, Dr. Hanana sought advanced surgical training at the University of Washington in Seattle. Here, he gained invaluable experience at the world-renowned Seattle Children's Hospital, treating children with congenital and acquired facial deformities. He further broadened his expertise through an internship at the University of Detroit Mercy/St. John Health, mastering IV sedation, dental implant surgery, wisdom teeth extractions and managing head and neck cancer patients. Notably, he also mentored dental students and provided surgical care at a local community clinic.
Dr. Hanana's dedication culminated in a rigorous four-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He received extensive training in various surgical procedures, facial trauma reconstruction surgery, sedation/general anesthesia techniques, and patient care at renowned institutions like Children's National Hospital and Washington DC VA Medical center. Throughout his residency, he collaborated with esteemed surgeons in Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, ENT, and General Surgery. Dr. Hanana passed the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Qualifying Exam while still a Chief Resident. He is currently board-eligible for Oral Certifying Exam. His exemplary leadership, humane attributes and clinical excellence earned him the prestigious Lawoyin Memorial Award for Humanitarian Acts and Leadership in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Passion for Making a Difference
Dr. Hanana's desire to improve access to dental care fuels his practice philosophy. He treats patients with dental anxiety and those with dental phobias. He actively advocates for group dentistry, allowing patients to benefit from the expertise of various dental disciplines.
Beyond the Surgical Suite
Dr. Hanana embodies the spirit of giving back. He dedicates time to volunteer services and teaching, believing in the power of community upliftment. When not immersed in his profession, he finds solace in reading, and he enjoys a friendly game of tennis with his wife.
