Dr. Downey was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and grew up in Cary, North Carolina. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her D.M.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She completed a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the Navy Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL. After practicing as a general dentist with the Marines at Camp Lejeune, Dr. Downey moved to Virginia and completed residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Dr. Downey remains in the Navy as an officer and is currently treating sailors on the USS Harry S. Truman. She chose to join Dental Specialty Centers of Virginia part time because she enjoys team unity and collaboration with other dental providers. Dr. Downey also prefers the integrated care it provides to the patients. Dr. Downey is actively pursuing board certification. She is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
