Dr. Winkelmann attended West Virginia University, graduating cum laude with a degree in electrical engineering. He then completed a master's degree in electrical engineering. Dr. Winkelmann worked for Harris Corporation as an engineer and project manager. He then worked as a client representative and large systems marketing representative at IBM Corporation. Dr. Winkelmann left IBM to attend dental school at the University of Maryland, graduating magna cum laude. He completed a two-year dental residency at the VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. He is IV sedation trained and holds Advanced Cardiac Life Support credentials. Dr. Winkelmann is a member of the American Dental Association, the North Carolina Dental Society, and the Academy of General Dentistry. He has earned Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry in 2004 and Mastership in 2025. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.
