Why Dentistry? I played a lot of rugby growing up and had to make regular visits to the dentist to get my teeth put back together! I liked the idea of having the skills to do that, especially to fix smiles and help people feel better about themselves. I also had a passion for science and working with my hands. Dentistry combines all those things. What is your favourite part of dentistry? I like the interaction with patients from start to finish. Unlike other areas of healthcare, in dentistry I can work with a patient from start to finish to achieve what they want. It is wonderful when you can take an anxious patient through the treatment process and get a great result. What has been your proudest moment? I have a patient who looks after her teeth, but through a combination of factors they are failing. This week she admitted how low her confidence is with her teeth and how upset it is making her. We discussed the options with her and communicated a clear plan of how we can fix her smile. Already, before treatment has even started, her confidence has increased. This is what makes the job worth doing. What do you do outside work? I love having hobbies (I’ll try anything once!), but as I have two young children I don’t get much chance. When I do have time, I enjoy anything related to motorbikes and I also try to keep fit. My rugby days are sadly over, much to the relief of my face!
