Why dentistry? When I was a teenager, I always thought that I would end up being a clinical psychologist or performing artist. I finally settled on dentistry after meeting a dentist on a careers day who had a good work – life balance and so I thought it was a wise move. Somewhere in my second year of dental school I absolutely fell in love with the craft of dentistry and as a result, I wouldn’t change what I do for the world! Now I am studying for my masters in King’s college London. What do you love about dentistry? My passion is restorative dentistry – creating and refreshing smiles. It is what I fell in love with at dental school and what I’m doing my masters in. There is so much art involved in creating a smile and I love watching it come to life one piece at a time. Smiles change lives and I have seen that happen time and time again. In addition to this, I really enjoy working with anxious patients to help them cope with receiving basic and, over time, elective care. I feel my personal interest in psychology, and in particular the area of mental health, has helped me develop a set of skills that work really well for my patients. What do you do outside of work? Apart from studying for my masters, I enjoy cooking, eating with friends, playing my piano, running (when it’s not too wet and not too cold!) and travelling the world. I also play and sing as part of the Freedom Church Chester band once a month.
