As a child, Wayne lived in Perth and the surrounding country areas as his father, a teacher, was transferred. He moved back to Scarborough in the 1970s. Wayne won a music scholarship to Perth Modern School, where he studied both cello and voice, before continuing his education at the University of Western Australia. Upon graduating at the end of 1985, Wayne moved to Tasmania to work with JM Pickup and Associates. During this time, he consolidated his general dental knowledge and developed expertise in areas such as tongue tie, implants, and cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Wayne Ottaway became heavily involved in the Australian Dental Association (ADA), becoming the youngest state president of the ADA. He has served on several key bodies, including the Dental Board of Tasmania, the Dental Prosthetist Registration Board, the Australian Dental Council, the State ADA Council (for 28 years), and the Federal ADA Council (for 20 years). Dr. Ottaway has presented lectures to a variety of healthcare professionals, including midwives, lactation consultants, general practitioners, and final-year medical students.
