Originally from Hong Kong, Dr Jonathan Chu grew up in New Zealand. It is in New Zealand where Jonathan went to dental school graduating with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery with Honours from the University of Otago in 2016. After graduation, Jonathan worked as a House Officer for the Department of Dental and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery in Dunedin Public Hospital and the University of Otago School of Dentistry from 2017-2018. Jonathan is a member of the New Zealand dental association (NZDA) and Australian dental association (ADA). Throughout Jonathan’s time working in the Hospital and private practices, he has developed a special interest in restorative dentistry, root canal therapy and oral surgery including surgical extractions of impacted wisdom teeth. Jonathan chose to work in dentistry as, throughout his childhood, he had always had a passion for sculpture and modelling. As he was finishing school, Jonathan developed an interest in the medical sciences and wanted to pursue a career which enabled him to help and to improve the lives of others. Dentistry enabled him to pursue this by combining his interests and passion to serve the community. Jonathan’s favourite part about working in the dental industry is he firmly believes that being able to smile confidently makes a huge difference in someone’s life and self-confidence. Working in the dental field enables Jonathan to directly make a difference in people’s lives by creating and maintaining the best smile for every patient. Jonathan is a firm believer in prevention of dental disease. He believes that education is key in patient care. Helping the patient to understand the process of decay, modes of intervention and preventative measures are vital goals towards a healthy and beautiful smile. In his spare time, Jonathan is an avid musician and enjoy playing the piano and clarinet. Outside of work, Jonathan likes spending his spare time in the kitchen and trying new recipes and keeping his family and friends well fed. Additionally, Jonathan loves travelling and discovering new places. He has a keen interest in volunteer work, regularly going overseas to provide dental services to rural villages in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vanuatu.
