Dr. Sophie R. Couto was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario. She graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honors Bachelor of Science degree in 2011. She completed her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Southern California in 2016. Dr. Couto returned to Northern Ontario to practice general dentistry with her father and from there decided to pursue the field of periodontology. She completed her surgical residency training in Periodontics and Implantology at Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry in 2020. She concurrently completed her Master of Science in Oral Biology and published her Masters research in 2021 on acellular dermal matrix materials for soft tissue grafting. Dr. Couto then went on to practice periodontology in Upstate New York before moving to Ottawa in 2021. Dr. Couto is the recipient of the G. Donald Montgomery Excellence in Dentistry Award, the Julio Edelman Memorial Award, the Robert W. McNulty Memorial Award, the Alpha Omega Certificate of Academic Achievement Award, and the International College of Dentists USA Section Procter & Gamble Student Leadership Award. She is an initiate of the Zeta Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Dental Society. Dr. Couto enjoys baking, reading, travelling, playing badminton and spending time with her family and her dog Leo.
