Preventive Dentistry Module

About This Course

A competency-based program approved by the College of Alberta Dental Assistants (CADA) that provides Registered Dental Assistants (RDAs) with advanced training in preventive dentistry. Upon completion, participants are authorized to perform limited scaling under the supervision and direction of a dentist or registered dental hygienist.

✓Describe prevention, detection and intervention for different forms of cancer
✓Identify and describe tobacco-related lesions
✓Identify, describe and document extraoral and intraoral soft tissue lesions
✓Identify, document and explain common tongue conditions
✓Describe oral lesions caused by removable prosthetics
✓Differentiate between gingival conditions and periodontal disease
✓Plan, document and execute oral health promotion
✓Connect ergonomics to operator career longevity
✓Describe periodontal probe uses for assessment
✓Detect supragingival and subgingival dental abnormalities
✓Select appropriate periodontal instruments
✓Demonstrate appropriate instrument grasps and fulcrums
✓Demonstrate accurate adaptations and angulations
✓Recognize safe and effective working strokes
✓Perform systematic manual supragingival and subgingival calculus removal
✓Assess and select power-driven instrumentation
✓Compare different instrumentation methods
✓Integrate CADA Code of Ethics

✓Perform full mouth periodontal probing
