About Us

Higgins and Winter Dental Practice was formed in November 2011 by the conversion of a former dental surgery into a modern, state-of-the-art practice. It lies in the heart of Ponteland village with close links to local amenities and easy access from all road routes through Ponteland. The practice serves the local area, Northumberland, and the North East.

The practice was established by Kevin Higgins and Richard Winter, both local residents with many years of experience in the area. They are committed, enthusiastic dental professionals who have gained further postgraduate qualifications and are devoted to high levels of patient care. The priority is to provide excellence in all treatments in a safe, relaxing environment where patients are involved in the treatment planning process.

A wide range of treatments is offered, from routine dental care to high-end cosmetic and dental implant therapies, including facial aesthetics and cosmetic orthodontics. The vision is to put patients at the heart of everything, ensuring the highest standard of care from the moment they step into the practice.

Kevin is from Liverpool but has spent the past 22 years in the North East. He has a wife and daughter and he lives only a short distance from the practice. Kevin graduated from Newcastle Dental School in 1991. He has been actively involved with the training and mentoring of younger dentists. He continued his professional development by studying for the Diploma in Postgraduate Dental Studies from Bristol University following which he passed his membership examinations for the Faculty of General Dental Practice at the Royal College of Surgeons. In addition Kevin has completed both the Sheffield University Dental Implant Foundation course and the 15 month implant training pathway at Newcastle Dental Hospital. Kevin has a strong interest in providing cosmetic braces and has invested in becoming a certified provider for Invisalign, Six Month Smiles and the Inman Aligner brace systems. He enjoys dealing with orthodontic (braces), implant, cosmetic and general dental patients and is able to offer dental sedation for those patients who need a little help to overcome any dental anxiety during their treatment. Kevin is able to offer a comprehensive, friendly and honest service to a wide range of patients across the North East.

Richard is an adopted Geordie, having spent the last 21 years in Newcastle. He graduated from Newcastle in 1995. After 18 months in practice, he travelled extensively through SE Asia and Australia, spending time as lead dentist on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. On returning to the UK, Richard developed his skills in Restorative and Implant dentistry, attending both Sheffield and Manchester University for postgraduate training in these areas. This was then followed by a teaching post at Newcastle Dental Hospital, running in parallel with his position in private practice. Richard has passed both the MFGDP and MJDF Royal College of Surgeons exams and is now the tutor for the northern region for the Faculty of General Dental Practice, helping young and aspiring dentists attain this demanding qualification. Richard’s interests revolve around restorative and implant dentistry, and thoroughly enjoys his role in general practice. He has a wife and three daughters who live locally and attend the local schools.

Steve qualified from Newcastle in 2009 with a Merit in Clinical Dentistry and the James Coltman Award for Operative Dentistry. He then passed the ‘Diploma of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties’ at The Royal College of Surgeons of England, in 2010. He is currently midway through studying for a Masters level degree (MSc), in Aesthetic Dentistry, (a combination of cosmetic and functional dentistry) at Kings College London. He has a keen interest in minimally invasive, aesthetic dentistry. This includes white fillings, crowns, veneers and whitening. Minimally invasive means less drilling and destruction to your teeth to gain the best results.

Emma graduated from Newcastle dental school in 2000. Following a year’s postgraduate vocational training, Emma developed her skills working over a 10 year period in a vibrant general practice in Newcastle. Being committed to continually develop her professional skills, in 2011, Emma took the opportunity to study for an extra two years at the renowned Paul Tipton’s Academy in Manchester. This postgraduate education focuses on advanced skills in the provision of high quality dentistry. As part of this training, Emma received advanced training in cosmetic and restorative techniques such as Smile Design, Bonding, Veneers, Crowns and Bridges. Emma is also a certified provider of cosmetic tooth straightening systems and is a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Emma is thrilled to have returned back to the North East to continue to continue her work as a friendly compassionate dentist. Her aim is to help people overcome their anxiety of dentistry, whether it is for simple treatment or cosmetically improving the appearance of their smile. Emma also has a keen eye on facial aesthetics and is trained in facial rejuvenation procedures using wrinkle-relaxing injections, dermal fillers and PRP skin revitalisation techniques. Outside of work, Emma enjoys spending time with her family, playing tennis and learning the art of Yoga.
