Dr Fiona van Heerden is highly experienced in providing orthodontic care and IV sedation, helping patients of all ages achieve healthy, confident smiles in a safe and comfortable way. She is a member of the New Zealand Society for Sedation and Anaesthesia in Dentistry and holds a Fellowship in Orthodontics in General Dental Practice from the International College of Continuing Dental Education. Fiona has completed extensive orthodontic training through Progressive Orthodontics (POS), an internationally recognised U.S.-based program. Her training includes the POS Basic Orthodontic Series (Honours), Advanced Orthodontics, Aligner Series, and Children’s Orthodontics. She offers a full range of orthodontic services, from early intervention treatments such as Invisalign First, fixed and removable appliances, through to fixed braces and Invisalign® for teens and adults. She also has a particular interest in pre-restorative orthodontic planning, working closely with patients to prepare the mouth for long-term functional and aesthetic results. Alongside her orthodontic work, Fiona is trained and qualified in IV sedation, providing safe and effective care for patients who are anxious, medically complex, or undergoing more advanced treatment. Her calm, patient-centred manner combined with sedation allows her to make dental care more accessible and stress-free. Graduating from the University of Otago in 1994 with a BDS (with credit), Fiona has built over two decades of experience in general dentistry. While her main focus is orthodontics and sedation, she also practises restorative dentistry using CEREC technology, endodontics, and surgical extractions, including wisdom teeth. Outside of dentistry, Fiona is actively involved in the water polo community. She and her husband have three children, two of which are currently at university and their youngest at Sacred Heart College.
