Mark graduated from the University of Otago School of Dentistry in 1982. He has an interest in oral surgery, completing a clinical attachment at the Royal Melbourne Dental Hospital. He started placing implants in 1992 and has completed over 10,000 surgical cases. In 2000 he restricted his practice to oral surgery and dental implants, gaining ACC registration as a specialist dental implant provider. He has taught oral surgery and lectured on implants. He holds a certificate in Forensic Odontology from the University of British Columbia and serves as a senior dental officer (Major) in the NZDF.
